Data Storage Converter

Convert bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB, and PB.

Understanding Data Storage Converter

Digital data is measured using units that describe the amount of information that can be stored or represented. The byte is a fundamental unit of digital storage, while larger quantities are commonly expressed using kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes.

These measurements are used when describing computer files, hard drives, solid-state drives, memory cards, USB storage, cloud storage, databases, and other digital systems. Converting between storage units makes it easier to compare file sizes and storage capacities.

Using the result in context

Data Storage Converter is designed to make unit changes easier to verify without doing the conversion by hand. Start with the quantity and source unit, then select the destination unit when the calculator provides that choice. The available units or options include Bytes (B), Kibibytes (KiB), Mebibytes (MiB), Gibibytes (GiB).

What this calculation can and cannot tell you

A conversion changes the way a quantity is expressed; it does not change the underlying quantity. Pay attention to squared or cubed units, prefixes such as kilo- or milli-, and regional measurement conventions. Keeping the original value visible while checking the converted value is a simple way to catch a mistaken unit selection.

This converter uses binary storage units: KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, and PiB. Each unit is 1,024 times the preceding unit.

About the Data Storage Converter

Digital data is measured using units that describe the amount of information that can be stored or represented. The byte is a fundamental unit of digital storage, while larger quantities are commonly expressed using kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes.

These measurements are used when describing computer files, hard drives, solid-state drives, memory cards, USB storage, cloud storage, databases, and other digital systems. Converting between storage units makes it easier to compare file sizes and storage capacities.

What Is a Byte?

A byte is a standard unit of digital information. In many computing systems, one byte consists of eight bits. Bytes are commonly used to describe the size of files and the capacity of digital storage devices.

1 byte = 8 bits

Binary Data Storage Units

Binary storage units are based on powers of 1,024. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) uses the prefixes kibibyte, mebibyte, gibibyte, tebibyte, and pebibyte for these units.

1 KiB = 1,024 B
1 MiB = 1,024 KiB
1 GiB = 1,024 MiB
1 TiB = 1,024 GiB
1 PiB = 1,024 TiB

Kibibyte

One kibibyte (KiB) contains 1,024 bytes. It is a binary unit commonly used when describing digital data in computing.

Mebibyte

One mebibyte (MiB) contains 1,024 kibibytes, or 1,048,576 bytes.

Gibibyte

One gibibyte (GiB) contains 1,024 mebibytes and is equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Tebibyte

One tebibyte (TiB) contains 1,024 gibibytes. It is useful for describing very large storage capacities.

Pebibyte

One pebibyte (PiB) contains 1,024 tebibytes and is generally used for very large-scale storage systems such as enterprise infrastructure and large data environments.

Binary vs Decimal Storage

One of the most common sources of confusion in data storage is the difference between decimal and binary units. Decimal units are based on powers of 1,000, while binary units are based on powers of 1,024.

Decimal:
1 KB = 1,000 B
1 MB = 1,000 KB
1 GB = 1,000 MB

Binary:
1 KiB = 1,024 B
1 MiB = 1,024 KiB
1 GiB = 1,024 MiB

Why a 1 TB Drive May Appear Smaller

Storage manufacturers commonly advertise drive capacities using decimal units. For example, a manufacturer may define 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.

Software may instead display the same number of bytes using a binary calculation. Because one tebibyte contains 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, the displayed numerical value can appear smaller even though the physical storage capacity has not changed.

1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes
1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes

How Data Storage Conversion Works

The converter uses bytes as the common reference unit. The entered value is first multiplied by the number of bytes in its selected unit. The resulting number of bytes is then divided by the number of bytes represented by the target unit.

Target Value = (Original Value × Source Unit in Bytes) ÷ Target Unit in Bytes

Data Storage Conversion Example

Suppose you want to convert 1,024 MiB into GiB. Because one gibibyte contains 1,024 mebibytes, the calculation is:

1,024 MiB ÷ 1,024 = 1 GiB

Therefore, 1,024 MiB is equal to exactly 1 GiB.

File Size and Storage Capacity

Data storage units can be used for both individual files and entire storage devices. Small files may be measured in bytes or kilobytes, while photos, videos, applications, and backups are often measured in megabytes or gigabytes.

Large databases, enterprise storage systems, and data centers may use terabytes or petabytes to describe their capacity.

Common Data Storage Conversions

1 KiB = 1,024 B
1 MiB = 1,048,576 B
1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 B
1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 B
1 PiB = 1,125,899,906,842,624 B

Where Data Storage Conversion Is Used

Data storage conversion is useful when comparing hard-drive capacities, SSD capacities, cloud-storage plans, memory cards, USB drives, file sizes, backups, database sizes, and networked storage systems. It is also useful when interpreting storage specifications from different manufacturers or software systems.

Understanding Bits and Bytes

A bit is the smallest basic unit of digital information and can represent a binary value such as 0 or 1. A byte consists of eight bits and is commonly used as the basic unit for describing file and storage sizes.

8 bits = 1 byte

Storage capacity and network transfer speed should not be confused. Storage is commonly expressed in bytes, while network speeds are frequently expressed in bits per second.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bytes are in a kilobyte?

In the decimal system, 1 KB equals 1,000 bytes. In the binary system, 1 KiB equals 1,024 bytes.

How many bytes are in a megabyte?

One decimal megabyte (MB) equals 1,000,000 bytes, while one mebibyte (MiB) equals 1,048,576 bytes.

How many bytes are in a gigabyte?

One decimal gigabyte (GB) equals 1,000,000,000 bytes, while one gibibyte (GiB) equals 1,073,741,824 bytes.

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

GB is a decimal unit based on powers of 1,000, while GiB is a binary unit based on powers of 1,024.

Why does my computer show less storage than advertised?

Storage manufacturers commonly use decimal units, while some operating systems or software may display storage using binary calculations. The difference between the two conventions can make the displayed capacity appear smaller.

Is 1 TB the same as 1 TiB?

No. One terabyte (TB) is a decimal unit equal to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. One tebibyte (TiB) is a binary unit equal to 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.

How many bits are in a byte?

One byte contains eight bits.

Are storage units based on 1,000 or 1,024?

Both conventions are used. Decimal units such as KB, MB, GB, and TB use powers of 1,000, while binary units such as KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB use powers of 1,024.

What is the largest unit supported by this converter?

This converter supports pebibytes (PiB), in addition to bytes, kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes, and tebibytes.
