Ideal Weight Calculator
Find your healthy weight range.
Understanding Ideal Weight Calculator
An ideal weight calculator provides a mathematical reference for estimating body weight based primarily on height and, depending on the formula, sex. There is no single body weight that can accurately be considered ideal for every individual. Healthy body weight varies according to body composition, muscle mass, bone structure, age, genetics, fat distribution, physical activity, nutrition, and overall health.
This calculator provides two different reference approaches. The first uses the Devine formula to estimate ideal body weight from height and sex. The second calculates a height-based weight range corresponding to an adult BMI of 18.5 through 24.9.
A practical way to use this calculator
Ideal Weight Calculator is most useful when the measurements you enter are taken using the same units and definitions shown beside each field. The calculator asks for values such as Gender, Height (cm); enter the measurements as accurately and consistently as possible rather than rounding them before calculation.
What can change the answer
The number produced by this tool should be read in the context of the inputs and the method used by the calculator. A calculated health or fitness figure can be useful for education, planning, or tracking change over time, but it does not by itself describe every aspect of an individual’s health.
About Ideal Weight Calculator
An ideal weight calculator provides a mathematical reference for estimating body weight based primarily on height and, depending on the formula, sex. There is no single body weight that can accurately be considered ideal for every individual. Healthy body weight varies according to body composition, muscle mass, bone structure, age, genetics, fat distribution, physical activity, nutrition, and overall health.
This calculator provides two different reference approaches. The first uses the Devine formula to estimate ideal body weight from height and sex. The second calculates a height-based weight range corresponding to an adult BMI of 18.5 through 24.9.
Devine Ideal Body Weight Formula
The Devine formula is a commonly cited ideal-body-weight equation. It was originally developed as a reference for medication dosing and has since been used more broadly as an estimated ideal body-weight calculation.
Ideal Weight = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
Women:
Ideal Weight = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
The formula uses 60 inches, or 5 feet, as its reference height. For each inch above 5 feet, approximately 2.3 kg is added to the base value. The calculator converts centimeters to inches before applying the formula.
BMI-Based Healthy Weight Range
BMI provides another commonly used height-to-weight reference. For adults, BMI values from 18.5 through 24.9 are generally classified as the healthy weight category.
Weight = BMI × Height (m)²
Applying the BMI boundaries of 18.5 and 24.9 to a person's height produces an estimated weight interval corresponding to that adult BMI category.
Why There Is No Universal Ideal Weight
Body weight does not directly describe body composition. Two people with identical height and weight can have substantially different proportions of muscle, fat, bone, water, and other tissues.
Someone who has developed significant muscle mass through resistance training may weigh more than a height-based reference while still having a healthy level of body fat. Conversely, a person within a calculated weight range may still have excess body fat or other metabolic risk factors.
Devine Weight vs. BMI-Based Range
The Devine formula produces a single estimated weight, while the BMI approach produces a range. Because the methods were developed using different assumptions, their results may not be identical.
The Devine estimate should therefore not be treated as a mandatory target. The BMI-based range is also a screening reference rather than a guarantee of optimal health.
BMI 22 Reference Weight
This calculator also provides a reference weight corresponding to a BMI of 22. This value is located near the middle of the adult healthy BMI category and is included as an additional mathematical reference.
BMI 22 is not a universally recommended target weight. It is simply a convenient reference point within the adult BMI range.
Factors That Influence Healthy Body Weight
Healthy body weight is influenced by many factors beyond height and sex. Body composition, muscle mass, age, genetics, physical activity, nutrition, sleep, fat distribution, and overall metabolic health can all contribute to an individual's appropriate weight range.
Waist circumference and body-fat percentage may provide additional information because they can describe aspects of body composition and fat distribution that height-and-weight formulas cannot capture.
Limitations of Ideal Weight Formulas
Ideal-weight formulas are mathematical estimates and do not directly measure body fat, muscle mass, bone density, hydration, or metabolic health.
BMI also has limitations because it cannot distinguish between muscle and fat or determine where fat is stored. For this reason, these calculations are most useful when interpreted alongside other measures of health.
Children and Adolescents
Adult ideal-weight formulas should not be applied to children and adolescents in the same manner as adults. Growth and development produce substantial changes in body composition throughout childhood.
Pediatric weight assessment generally uses age- and sex-specific growth references and BMI percentiles rather than a single adult ideal-weight value.
Understanding the Results
The result displays the estimated Devine ideal body weight, the BMI-based healthy weight range for the entered height, and an additional BMI 22 reference value.
These values are intended as general reference calculations. They should not be interpreted as a personalized medical target or as a diagnosis of healthy or unhealthy body weight.
Example
Height: 175 cm
Height in inches: 68.9 inches
Devine Formula:
50 + 2.3 × (68.9 − 60)
≈ 70.5 kg
BMI-Based Reference Range:
BMI 18.5 ≈ 56.7 kg
BMI 24.9 ≈ 76.3 kg
BMI 22 Reference:
≈ 67.4 kg
Using the Result Responsibly
The most useful way to interpret an ideal-weight calculation is as one reference point among several health measurements. Body-fat percentage, waist circumference, physical fitness, blood pressure, metabolic markers, nutrition, and activity levels can provide additional context.
The calculator provides estimates based on established mathematical formulas and does not determine an individual's medically appropriate target weight.
