Scientific Notation Calculator

Convert numbers to and from scientific notation and perform calculations.

Understanding Scientific Notation Calculator

Scientific notation is a standardized way of representing very large or very small numbers in a compact form. Instead of writing every zero in a number, scientific notation separates the significant part of the number from its power of ten. This makes the size of a number easier to read, compare, calculate, and communicate.

A number written in scientific notation has the form a × 10n, where the coefficient a is normally at least 1 and less than 10 in absolute value, and n is an integer. The exponent tells you the scale of the number.

How to get a useful estimate

Scientific Notation Calculator is intended to show the mathematical relationship behind the answer, not just return a number. Enter the quantities requested by the selected method—such as Number—and keep their units or mathematical meaning consistent. Where this calculator offers different shapes, methods, or forms, choose the one that matches the problem before entering the values.

When the result is an estimate

For a useful check, look at the units and the scale of the answer before accepting it. A formula can be evaluated correctly while an input is still inappropriate for the problem. Repeating the calculation with a simple test value or checking the result against the expected direction of change can help identify an input mistake.

Enter a large or small number. The calculator will show its scientific notation, E-notation, engineering notation, exponent, coefficient, and verification.

Scientific Notation Formula

x = a × 10n

where:

1 ≤ |a| < 10

n is an integer.

Examples of Scientific Notation

Large number: 450,000 = 4.5 × 105

Very large number: 1,000,000 = 1 × 106

Small decimal: 0.00032 = 3.2 × 10−4

Negative number: −5,000,000 = −5 × 106

Understanding the Coefficient

The coefficient is the number written before × 10. In normalized scientific notation, its absolute value is at least 1 and less than 10.

7.25 × 104

Coefficient: 7.25

Exponent: 4

Keeping the coefficient in this range creates a consistent representation and makes different numbers easier to compare.

Understanding the Exponent

The exponent determines the power of 10 used to scale the coefficient. Its sign provides an immediate indication of whether the original number is large or small.

5.2 × 106 = 5,200,000

5.2 × 10−6 = 0.0000052

Positive exponents generally represent numbers larger than 1, while negative exponents represent numbers between 0 and 1.

How to Convert a Large Number

To convert a large number to scientific notation, move the decimal point to the left until only one non-zero digit remains before the decimal point. Count how many positions the decimal point moved. That number becomes the positive exponent.

4,500,000

= 4.5 × 106

The decimal point moves six places to the left, so the exponent is 6.

How to Convert a Small Number

For a number between zero and one, move the decimal point to the right until the first non-zero digit is immediately before the decimal point. The number of positions moved becomes a negative exponent.

0.00072

= 7.2 × 10−4

The decimal point moves four positions to the right, so the exponent is −4.

Positive and Negative Exponents

The sign of the exponent is important. A positive exponent means that the coefficient is multiplied by a positive power of ten, while a negative exponent means that the coefficient is divided by a power of ten.

3 × 104 = 30,000

3 × 10−4 = 0.0003

Scientific Notation and E-Notation

E-notation represents scientific notation in a compact computer-friendly format. Instead of writing × 10, the letter e is used.

4.5 × 106 = 4.5e6

3.2 × 10−4 = 3.2e-4

E-notation is frequently encountered in programming, spreadsheets, calculators, databases, and scientific software.

Engineering Notation

Engineering notation is closely related to scientific notation, but its exponent is restricted to multiples of three: ..., −9, −6, −3, 0, 3, 6, 9, ...

Scientific notation: 1.234 × 108

Engineering notation: 123.4 × 106

Engineering notation is particularly useful in engineering and technical fields because powers of ten that are multiples of three correspond naturally to many SI prefixes.

Scientific Notation and Significant Figures

Scientific notation can make significant figures easier to identify. The digits in the coefficient generally represent the significant digits being communicated.

6.25 × 108

This representation contains 3 significant figures.

Changing the exponent changes the scale of the number, while changing the digits in the coefficient can change its stated precision.

Multiplication Using Scientific Notation

Scientific notation makes multiplication easier because the coefficients and powers of ten can be handled separately.

(a × 10m) × (b × 10n)

= (a × b) × 10m+n

For example:

(2 × 103) (4 × 105)

= 8 × 108

Division Using Scientific Notation

For division, divide the coefficients and subtract the exponents.

(a × 10m) ÷ (b × 10n)

= (a ÷ b) × 10m−n

For example:

(8 × 107) ÷ (2 × 103)

= 4 × 104

Adding and Subtracting in Scientific Notation

Addition and subtraction require more care. Before combining two values, their powers of ten should be made equal. Once the exponents match, the coefficients can be added or subtracted.

1.2 × 104 + 3.4 × 103

= 1.2 × 104 + 0.34 × 104

= 1.54 × 104

Scientific Notation in Science

Scientific notation is commonly used in physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology, engineering, and other scientific fields. Scientific measurements can span enormous ranges, from microscopic distances to astronomical quantities.

Using powers of ten makes these differences in scale much easier to communicate and calculate.

Why Use Scientific Notation?

Scientific notation provides several practical advantages:

• Makes very large numbers shorter to write.

• Makes very small numbers easier to read.

• Clearly communicates the order of magnitude.

• Helps identify significant figures.

• Simplifies multiplication and division involving powers of ten.

• Provides a standard format for scientific and technical work.
