Time Converter
Convert seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks.
Understanding Time Converter
The Time Converter converts durations between commonly used units of time, including seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years. It is useful for everyday calculations, scheduling, project planning, travel, education, programming, science, engineering, sports, and other situations where a duration needs to be expressed in a different unit.
Time units do not all have the same type of relationship. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks have fixed standard relationships. Months and years are different because they are connected to the calendar and can vary in length.
Using the result in context
Time Converter is designed to make unit changes easier to verify without doing the conversion by hand. Start with the quantity and source unit, then select the destination unit when the calculator provides that choice. The available units or options include Seconds (s), Minutes (min), Hours (h), Days.
A quick check before using the result
A conversion changes the way a quantity is expressed; it does not change the underlying quantity. Pay attention to squared or cubed units, prefixes such as kilo- or milli-, and regional measurement conventions. Keeping the original value visible while checking the converted value is a simple way to catch a mistaken unit selection.
Enter a duration, choose the original time unit and the unit you want to convert to. Month and year conversions use average Gregorian calendar durations because actual calendar months and years can vary in length.
About the Time Converter
The Time Converter converts durations between commonly used units of time, including seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years. It is useful for everyday calculations, scheduling, project planning, travel, education, programming, science, engineering, sports, and other situations where a duration needs to be expressed in a different unit.
Time units do not all have the same type of relationship. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks have fixed standard relationships. Months and years are different because they are connected to the calendar and can vary in length.
How Time Conversion Works
The converter uses seconds as the common reference unit. The original duration is first converted into seconds and then converted from seconds into the selected target unit.
Using a common reference unit allows different time measurements to be converted consistently without changing the actual duration.
Seconds
The second is the fundamental SI unit of time. It is commonly used for precise measurements and forms the basis for converting larger units such as minutes, hours, and days.
Minutes
A minute contains 60 seconds. Minutes are commonly used for short and medium-length durations such as meetings, exercise, cooking, travel intervals, and everyday activities.
Hours
An hour contains 60 minutes, or 3,600 seconds. Hours are commonly used for work schedules, travel durations, appointments, operating times, and other activities lasting longer than a few minutes.
1 hour = 3,600 seconds
Days
A conventional day contains 24 hours. In ordinary duration calculations, this corresponds to 86,400 seconds.
1 day = 1,440 minutes
1 day = 86,400 seconds
Weeks
A standard week contains seven days. Weeks are commonly used for planning schedules, projects, appointments, subscriptions, training programs, and other recurring activities.
1 week = 168 hours
Months
Months are calendar-based units and do not all contain the same number of days. Depending on the month, a calendar month can contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days.
Because of this variation, there is no single exact number of seconds that applies to every calendar month. For duration conversions, this calculator uses an average Gregorian month based on an average Gregorian year.
Average month = 365.2425 ÷ 12
Average month = 30.436875 days
Years
A calendar year normally contains 365 days, while a leap year contains 366 days. For general duration conversions, this calculator uses the average length of a Gregorian year.
This average accounts for the long-term Gregorian calendar cycle and is useful when converting a generic duration expressed in years into days or smaller fixed units.
Fixed Time Units vs Calendar Units
Seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks can be converted using fixed relationships. Months and years require additional care because they are calendar-based.
1 hour = 3,600 seconds
1 day = 86,400 seconds
1 week = 604,800 seconds
A conversion such as 5 hours to minutes has an exact fixed relationship. A conversion such as 5 calendar months to days cannot be determined exactly without knowing which months are involved.
Time Conversion Example
Suppose you have a duration of 3,600 seconds and want to express it in hours. Since one hour contains 3,600 seconds, the calculation is:
Therefore, 3,600 seconds is exactly equal to 1 hour.
Converting Hours to Days
Since a conventional day contains 24 hours, hours can be converted into days by dividing the number of hours by 24.
For example, 48 hours is equal to 2 days.
Converting Days to Weeks
Because one week contains seven days, a duration expressed in days can be converted to weeks by dividing by seven.
Why Months Are Different
Calendar months do not have a fixed duration. February can contain 28 or 29 days, while other months contain either 30 or 31 days. Therefore, saying that one month always equals a specific number of days is only an approximation.
For this reason, the calculator uses an average Gregorian month when a generic month-to-day or month-to-hour conversion is requested. If you need the exact number of days between two calendar dates, a date-based calculation should be used instead.
Why Years Are Different
Calendar years can contain either 365 or 366 days because of leap years. The Gregorian calendar uses leap-year rules to keep the calendar aligned with the Earth's seasonal cycle.
For generic duration conversions, an average Gregorian year of 365.2425 days provides a consistent long-term conversion factor.
Common Time Conversion Relationships
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 hour = 3,600 seconds
1 day = 24 hours
1 week = 7 days
1 year = 365.2425 days on average
Frequently Asked Questions
How many seconds are in a minute?
One minute contains exactly 60 seconds.
How many minutes are in an hour?
One hour contains exactly 60 minutes.
How many seconds are in an hour?
One hour contains exactly 3,600 seconds.
How many hours are in a day?
A conventional day contains 24 hours.
How many days are in a week?
One week contains seven days.
How many days are in a year?
A calendar year normally contains 365 days, while a leap year contains 366 days. For generic duration conversions, the calculator uses an average Gregorian year of 365.2425 days.
How many days are in a month?
There is no single exact number because calendar months vary between 28 and 31 days. This calculator uses an average Gregorian month of 30.436875 days for generic duration conversions.
How many hours are in a week?
One week contains 168 hours because seven days multiplied by 24 hours equals 168 hours.
How do I convert hours to minutes?
Multiply the number of hours by 60. For example, 2 hours equals 120 minutes.
How do I convert minutes to seconds?
Multiply the number of minutes by 60. For example, 5 minutes equals 300 seconds.
How do I convert days to hours?
Multiply the number of days by 24. For example, 3 days equals 72 hours.
Does the converter use 30 days for every month?
No. For generic month conversions, it uses an average Gregorian month of 30.436875 days rather than assuming that every month contains exactly 30 days.
Are month and year conversions exact?
Generic month and year conversions are based on average Gregorian durations. They should not be interpreted as exact calendar-date calculations because actual calendar months and years can vary in length.
