Typography Converter
Convert typography units such as points, picas, pixels, and other text measurement units.
Understanding Typography Converter
Typography is the practice of designing, arranging, and presenting written language so that text is readable, consistent, and visually effective. Measurements play an important role in typography because font sizes, spacing, margins, line dimensions, and other layout elements need to be expressed using consistent units. Depending on the design environment, measurements may be specified in points, picas, pixels, inches, centimeters, or millimeters.
The point (pt) is one of the most common units in typography and desktop publishing. In the modern desktop-publishing convention used by this calculator, one point is equal to 1/72 of an inch. This makes points particularly useful for specifying type sizes and other dimensions in documents, print layouts, and publishing software.
Using this calculator with your own numbers
Typography Converter is designed to make unit changes easier to verify without doing the conversion by hand. Start with the quantity and source unit, then select the destination unit when the calculator provides that choice. The available units or options include Point (pt), Pixel (px), Pica (pc), Inch (in).
What can change the answer
A conversion changes the way a quantity is expressed; it does not change the underlying quantity. Pay attention to squared or cubed units, prefixes such as kilo- or milli-, and regional measurement conventions. Keeping the original value visible while checking the converted value is a simple way to catch a mistaken unit selection.
About Typography Converter
A pica (pc) is a larger typographic unit containing 12 points. Because one inch contains 72 points, one pica corresponds to 1/6 of an inch. Picas are traditionally useful for measuring larger typography and page-layout dimensions such as column widths and line lengths.
Physical units such as inches, centimeters, and millimeters have fixed relationships. One inch equals 2.54 centimeters and 25.4 millimeters. These units are especially useful when a design must correspond to a physical printed size, such as a document, poster, brochure, label, or other printed material.
Pixels (px) are different from physical measurement units. A pixel represents a unit of digital image or display resolution, but its physical size is not universally fixed. The relationship between pixels and physical dimensions depends on an assumed resolution, commonly expressed as DPI (dots per inch). For this reason, converting points or inches into pixels requires a DPI value.
The DPI setting in this calculator determines how many pixels are assumed to represent one inch. For example, at 96 DPI, one inch is represented as 96 pixels. At 144 DPI, the same physical inch is represented as 144 pixels. Consequently, the same physical measurement can produce different pixel values when a different DPI assumption is selected.
Typography conversion is useful when moving between print design, document formatting, graphic design, web interfaces, and other digital workflows. It can help compare a font size specified in points with an equivalent pixel dimension, convert page-layout measurements into physical units, or translate measurements between metric and typographic systems.
How Typography Conversion Works
The calculator first converts the entered value into a common reference unit: inches. Once the measurement has been expressed in inches, it can be converted into the requested target unit using the appropriate conversion relationship.
This approach allows the calculator to handle conversions between points, pixels, picas, inches, centimeters, and millimeters using one consistent reference system.
1 inch = 72 pt
1 pica = 12 pt
1 inch = 6 pc
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 inch = 25.4 mm
Converting Points to Pixels
When converting points into pixels, the selected DPI value is used because pixels do not have a fixed physical size. The calculation first converts points into inches and then converts inches into pixels.
For example, at 96 DPI, a 12 pt measurement corresponds to:
Therefore, under the 96 DPI assumption, 12 pt is equivalent to approximately 16 px.
Converting Pixels to Points
The reverse calculation also depends on DPI. Pixels are first converted into inches using the selected DPI and then converted into points.
For example, at 96 DPI:
This demonstrates why the DPI value is essential whenever a conversion involves pixels.
Typography Units at a Glance
1 pt = 1/72 inch
12 pt = 1 pc
72 pt = 1 inch
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 inch = 25.4 mm
At 96 DPI: 1 inch = 96 px
Why DPI Matters
DPI is particularly important when a typography measurement is converted into pixels. A physical measurement does not change when the DPI changes, but the number of pixels used to represent that measurement does.
For example, 12 pt is 1/6 of an inch. At 96 DPI this corresponds to 16 pixels, while at 144 DPI it corresponds to 24 pixels. Both pixel values represent the same physical measurement under their respective DPI assumptions.
Print vs. Digital Typography
In print-oriented workflows, points, picas, inches, centimeters, and millimeters are often more meaningful because they describe dimensions that can correspond directly to physical output. A designer preparing a printed document may therefore work primarily with points and physical units.
Digital interfaces frequently use pixels or other screen-oriented units. However, the relationship between a CSS pixel, a device pixel, and a physical measurement can vary depending on the display and rendering environment. Therefore, a pixel conversion should be understood as an assumed or reference conversion rather than a guarantee of the exact physical size on every device.
Common Typography Conversions
12 pt = 1 pc = 1/6 in ≈ 0.4233 cm
24 pt = 2 pc = 1/3 in ≈ 0.8467 cm
36 pt = 3 pc = 1/2 in = 1.27 cm
72 pt = 6 pc = 1 in = 2.54 cm
Example
Suppose a designer wants to convert a font size of 12 pt into pixels using a reference resolution of 96 DPI.
The result is approximately 16 px. The same 12-point measurement at 144 DPI would produce approximately 24 px, demonstrating that pixel conversions depend on the selected resolution.
The Typography Converter provides these relationships in one place, allowing measurements to be compared across typographic, digital, and physical units while making the DPI assumption explicit for pixel-based conversions.
