Grade Calculator

Calculate your final course grade.

Understanding Grade Calculator

The Grade Calculator determines the average of multiple numerical scores and converts the resulting percentage into a letter grade using a standard grading scale. It can be used for test scores, quizzes, assignments, projects, homework, or other assessments where each score has the same weight.

Calculating an average is useful for understanding overall academic performance when individual scores contribute equally. The calculator adds the valid scores entered by the user and divides their total by the number of scores to determine the arithmetic mean.

A practical way to use this calculator

To use Grade Calculator effectively, enter the values requested by the calculator and keep their units and meaning consistent. The main information requested on this page includes Enter Your Scores. If the calculator offers selectable methods or options, choose the one that matches the question you are trying to answer.

When the result is an estimate

The result is calculated from the inputs shown on this page, so it is most useful when you understand what each input represents. Before relying on the number, check the units, the scale of the result, and any assumptions described above the calculator.

About the Grade Calculator

The Grade Calculator determines the average of multiple numerical scores and converts the resulting percentage into a letter grade using a standard grading scale. It can be used for test scores, quizzes, assignments, projects, homework, or other assessments where each score has the same weight.

Calculating an average is useful for understanding overall academic performance when individual scores contribute equally. The calculator adds the valid scores entered by the user and divides their total by the number of scores to determine the arithmetic mean.

This calculator uses a 0–100 percentage scale and a simplified letter grading system. Because schools and instructors can use different grading policies, the letter grade shown here should be considered a general interpretation rather than an official course grade.

How the Grade Calculator Works

Enter your numerical scores separated by commas. Each score must be between 0 and 100. The calculator adds all valid scores and divides the total by the number of valid scores.

Grade Average Formula

Average Score = Total of All Scores ÷ Number of Scores

For example, if the scores are 90, 85, 78, and 92:

Average = (90 + 85 + 78 + 92) ÷ 4
Average = 345 ÷ 4
Average = 86.25%

Example

Suppose a student receives four scores:

90, 85, 78, 92

The total is 345 points. Dividing 345 by 4 produces an average score of 86.25%. Using the standard grading scale in this calculator, this corresponds to a B.

Standard Grading Scale

This calculator uses the following simplified grading scale:

A = 90–100%
B = 80–89.99%
C = 70–79.99%
D = 60–69.99%
F = Below 60%

Grading boundaries are not universal. A particular school, university, instructor, or course may use different percentage ranges or may include plus and minus grades such as A-, B+, or C-.

Unweighted Grade Average

The calculator calculates a simple unweighted average. This means every score contributes equally to the final average regardless of the assignment type, number of points possible, or importance of the assessment.

For example, a score of 90 on one assessment and a score of 70 on another would contribute equally to the average, producing an average of 80%.

Weighted Grades

Many courses do not use a simple average. Instead, assignments, quizzes, exams, projects, and participation may each contribute a different percentage of the final grade.

In a weighted grading system, a score that represents a larger portion of the course grade has a greater effect on the final result. Simply averaging all percentages would not accurately reproduce that calculation.

Weighted Grade Formula

Weighted Grade = Sum of (Score × Weight) ÷ Sum of Weights

This calculator does not apply weighting. It is designed for cases where all entered scores have equal importance.

Average Score vs. Final Course Grade

An average score is not necessarily the same as an official final course grade. A course may include weighted categories, extra credit, dropped assignments, attendance policies, or other rules that affect the final result.

For an official academic grade, the grading policy provided by the relevant school or instructor should be used.

Understanding the Results

The Average Score represents the arithmetic mean of all valid scores. The Letter Grade provides a general letter interpretation based on the grading scale used by this calculator.

The Highest Score and Lowest Score show the range of the entered results, while the number of scores indicates how many valid entries were included in the calculation.

How to Enter Scores

Enter each score separated by a comma. Scores can contain decimal values and must be between 0 and 100.

For example:

95, 88, 91.5, 76, 84

Invalid entries are excluded from the calculation and identified in the result.

Improving an Average Grade

When all scores have equal weight, improving a low score can increase the overall average. The amount of improvement depends on the number of existing scores and the size of the new or improved score.

In a weighted course, however, improving a high-weight assessment may have a substantially greater effect than improving a low-weight assignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the average grade calculated?

The calculator adds all valid scores and divides the total by the number of valid scores.

What grading scale does this calculator use?

It uses a simplified scale in which 90–100% is A, 80–89.99% is B, 70–79.99% is C, 60–69.99% is D, and scores below 60% are F.

Can I enter decimal scores?

Yes. Decimal values such as 87.5 or 92.25 can be entered as long as they are between 0 and 100.

Can I enter scores above 100?

No. The calculator accepts scores from 0 to 100. Scores outside this range are treated as invalid entries.

Does this calculator support weighted grades?

No. It calculates a simple unweighted average in which every score contributes equally.

Is an average grade the same as my final course grade?

Not necessarily. A course may use weighted assignments, exams, projects, extra credit, dropped scores, or other grading rules.

Why might my school's letter grade be different?

Schools and instructors can use different grading scales and may also use plus and minus grades. The official grading policy for the course takes precedence.

What happens to invalid scores?

Entries that are not valid numbers between 0 and 100 are excluded from the calculation and displayed as invalid entries in the result.

Limitations of the Grade Calculator

This calculator provides a simple arithmetic average and uses a standard 0–100 grading scale. It does not calculate weighted course grades, GPA, credit-based averages, extra credit, grade replacement, dropped assignments, or institution-specific grading rules.

Because grading policies differ between schools and courses, the calculated letter grade should be treated as a general estimate. For official academic purposes, the grading system established by the relevant institution or instructor should be followed.
