Password Generator

Generate secure random passwords.

Understanding Password Generator

The Password Generator creates random passwords using the character types selected by the user. It can generate passwords containing uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, with a configurable length from 4 to 64 characters.

Strong passwords are generally longer and less predictable than passwords based on names, dates, common words, keyboard patterns, or other personal information. Increasing password length and expanding the available character set increases the number of possible combinations.

Before you read the final number

Password Generator is built for a specific practical task, so the quality of the output depends on using the options for the purpose you have in mind. The page's available controls and inputs determine how the result is produced; when present, they include Password Length, Include Characters, Uppercase Letters, Lowercase Letters.

Why the inputs matter

Use the output as a practical aid and review the settings before acting on it. If the tool offers multiple choices, selecting a different option can intentionally produce a different result, so the selected method should match the task rather than simply using the default.

About the Password Generator

The Password Generator creates random passwords using the character types selected by the user. It can generate passwords containing uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, with a configurable length from 4 to 64 characters.

Strong passwords are generally longer and less predictable than passwords based on names, dates, common words, keyboard patterns, or other personal information. Increasing password length and expanding the available character set increases the number of possible combinations.

This generator uses the browser's Web Crypto API to obtain cryptographically strong random values instead of relying on the ordinary JavaScript Math.random() function. This makes the random selection more appropriate for password generation. The generated password is created locally in the browser and is not sent to a server by this calculator.

How the Password Generator Works

Choose a password length and select the character types you want to include. The generator creates a character pool from the selected categories and randomly selects characters until the requested password length is reached.

When multiple character types are selected, the generator first includes at least one character from each selected category. The remaining positions are then filled randomly, and the complete password is shuffled so that the required characters do not appear in predictable positions.

Example

Password Length: 16
Character Types: Uppercase, Lowercase, Numbers, Symbols

Example output:
K7#mQ2v!9Lp@4Xs8

The actual password generated by the calculator will be different each time.

Password Length

Password length is one of the most important factors affecting the number of possible password combinations. A longer password generally provides a larger search space than a shorter password.

This generator allows passwords between 4 and 64 characters. For important accounts, longer passwords are generally preferable when supported by the service.

Character Sets

The generator supports four character categories:

Uppercase Letters: A–Z
Lowercase Letters: a–z
Numbers: 0–9
Symbols: !, @, #, $, %, and other supported symbols

Selecting more character categories increases the size of the character pool from which the password is generated.

Password Combinations

If a password uses a character pool containing N possible characters and has a length of L, the theoretical number of possible combinations is approximately:

Combination Formula

Possible Combinations = NL

Increasing either the character pool or the password length can dramatically increase the number of possible combinations.

Password Entropy

Password entropy is a way of describing the uncertainty or size of the possible password space. A simplified estimate for a randomly generated password can be expressed as:

Entropy Formula

Estimated Entropy = Length × log2(Character Pool Size)

The entropy shown by this calculator is an estimate based on the selected character pool and password length. It does not guarantee a particular level of real-world security.

Why Random Passwords Are Stronger

Human-created passwords often contain predictable information such as names, birthdays, favorite words, repeated patterns, or common substitutions. Attackers can use automated techniques to test these predictable patterns.

A randomly generated password avoids many of these predictable structures and creates a much larger search space.

Password Uniqueness

A strong password should also be unique to the account where it is used. Reusing the same password across multiple services means that a compromised password from one service may also expose other accounts.

Using a different password for each important account reduces the potential impact of a single credential compromise.

Password Managers

Password managers can help users generate, store, and manage unique passwords without requiring them to memorize every password. A password manager can be particularly useful when accounts require many long and unique credentials.

Multi-Factor Authentication

Password security should not be the only layer of account protection. Multi-factor authentication can provide an additional verification step when supported by a service.

Users should also remain alert to phishing attempts and avoid entering passwords into unfamiliar websites or applications.

Understanding the Strength Result

The strength indicator provides a general estimate based on the password's length and character pool. It should not be interpreted as a guarantee that a password is impossible to crack.

Longer randomly generated passwords generally provide a larger theoretical search space, but actual account security also depends on how the password is stored, the security practices of the service, authentication protections, and whether the password is exposed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the generated passwords random?

The generator uses the browser's Web Crypto API to obtain cryptographically strong random values for character selection.

Does the generator use Math.random()?

No. The generator uses crypto.getRandomValues() rather than Math.random() for random character selection.

Can I choose the password length?

Yes. You can generate passwords between 4 and 64 characters long.

Can I include symbols?

Yes. Enable the Symbols option to include supported special characters in the generated password.

Will the password contain every selected character type?

Yes. When multiple character types are selected, the generator ensures that at least one character from each selected category is included, provided the password is long enough.

What is password entropy?

Password entropy is a measure related to the size of the possible password space. Higher estimated entropy generally means more possible combinations for an attacker to search.

Is a longer password always better?

Length is an important factor, and longer randomly generated passwords generally provide a larger search space. However, account security also depends on other protections such as multi-factor authentication and secure password storage.

Should I reuse the generated password?

No. Important accounts should use unique passwords so that a compromise of one service does not automatically expose other accounts.

Does the generator send my password to a server?

This calculator generates the password locally in the browser. The calculator itself does not need to transmit the generated password to a server.

Can I use the generated password for an important account?

A randomly generated password can be suitable for account use when stored and handled securely. Users should also enable multi-factor authentication when available and follow the security requirements of the relevant service.

Limitations of the Password Generator

The strength and entropy figures provided by this calculator are estimates based on the selected character pool and password length. They do not guarantee that a password will remain secure against every possible attack.

Account security also depends on the website or service where the password is used, how credentials are stored, whether multi-factor authentication is enabled, and whether the password is ever exposed through phishing, malware, data breaches, or other security incidents.
